IOM response to KwaZulu Natal Emergency
IOM South Africa in collaboration with the Department of Social Development (DSD) provided infrastructure support to 12 shelters in KZN through the distribution of COVID 19 Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) measures, including personal protective equipment (PPE), Sanitizer dispensers, sanitizers, electronic temperature scanners, and hygiene and dignity packs. This support was provided to ensure that vulnerable and stranded women and children who are at risk of violence, exploitation, and abuse who reside in shelters have access to sufficient COVID 19 safeguards based on health guidelines and protocols of the World Health Organization and the Government of South Africa to keep them healthy and safe. These shelters are based in communities with a high number of migrants and provide a safe space to victims of gender- based violence (GBV), victims of trafficking (VoTs), unaccompanied migrant children (UMC), and other vulnerable groups.
