IOM Joins South Africa in Mourning the Passing of Utata Nelson Mandela
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in South Africa extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of former president Nelson Mandela, his wife Mrs Graca Machel, the Government and people of South Africa and millions of people across the world as we mourn the passing of the father of all nations, an icon of freedom, human rights and democracy, a hero for many and symbol of hope and peace.
Madiba’s passing is a loss not only to the people of South Africa but to all humankind who have embraced him as their own father, role model and icon. IOM believes his values and spirit of Ubuntu will remain a beacon of hope for united and inclusive South Africa.
“I remember Madiba’s humility and friendliness during my term as the United States Ambassador to South Africa. The world is extremely fortunate to have had the benefit of such a wonderful and inspirational leader as Nelson Mandela. His courage, integrity and generosity has transformed South Africa into a model of reconciliation, hope and progress,” says Ambassador William Lacy Swing, IOM Director General.
“Madiba’s legacy and inspiration will remain a part of us beyond our generation and we will forever treasure his life. May his soul rest in peace,” adds Bernardo Mariano, IOM Regional Director for Southern Africa.
