Commemoration of International Migrants Day

Cape Town - The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in South Africa through the Migration Multi – Partner Trust Fund joint project on social cohesion together with Africa Unite, Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Department of Social Development and Department of Justice and Constitutional Development celebrated International Migrants Day in Cape Town.

The celebrations took place under the theme “I am A Migrant” and provided an opportunity for those who attended the with an opportunity to participate in story telling through a drama that showcased some of the experiences faced by migrants as they seek to integrate in the community. The commemoration of International Migrants Day started which started on 12 December 2022 with stakeholder engagements and refresher training on Human rights, different categories of migrants and followed by mall and door-to-door activations in Gugulethu township on 13 December 2022. The purpose of the activations that drew participants from government representatives was to create awareness on the human rights of migrants, educate members of the different categories of migrants and mobilise communities to participate in the celebrations.

On 14 December 2022, the local soccer and netball teams participated in a friendly soccer and netball match. The soccer and netball teams comprised of a local football club that included South African legends and migrants with the purpose of promoting social mixing through sporting activities. Trophies and medals were awarded to the players after the friendly matches.
