Children’s Art Competition in South Africa Embraces Diversity and Commemorates International Migrants Day

IOM is holding a two-day art competition for children in South Africa to celebrate the diversity that migrants bring to the country.

The competition, held in the heart of the Administrative Capital of South Africa, Tshwane, will culminate in a prize-giving ceremony on Friday December 17. Under the theme, ‘Friends from around the world’, the competition is for children aged 6-16 with the aim of giving them a voice to better illustrate their experience of living with migrants or of being a migrants. It also aims to bring them together to foster a spirit of unity and coherence from a young age.

The children will draw and paint pictures to illustrate their experiences of how friends from different countries and cultural backgrounds make their lives better and what their understanding of migration is.

The initiative is in partnership with the Tshwane Leadership Foundation, a local civil society organization which works with churches and communities to build an inclusive community.

This competition is part of IOM’s larger drive to sensitise communities around the issue of inclusiveness in South Africa.
